The eligible candidates will be required to appear for written test. The written test will be based on minimum education qualification.
  • Syllabus for written exam :- General Intelligence & Reasoning, Numerical Aptitude, General English, General Awareness. The question cum answer paper will be in English and Hindi.
  • The requisite number of candidates will be shortlisted (may be restricted to 10 times of number of vacancies) and called for skill/physical/practical test wherever applicable. Further 100% weightage will be given for written test. The Practical/Physical/Skill test will be of qualifying nature only and marks awarded therein will not be added in total marks while preparing merit list.

The Indian Air Force Flying Branch consists of the Pilots. Under this branch, both men and women can join the Indian Air Force as pilots. These include Fighter Pilot, Transport Pilot, and Helicopter Pilot.

  1. Ground Duty Branch

Types of Commission

The Indian Air Force offers two different types of commissions to have an excellent career for both men and women. These two commission types include Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission.

  1. Permanent Commission

When you are employed with the Indian Air Force under the permanent commission, you will get to serve your country until the day you retire from the Indian Armed Forces.   1. National Defense Academy (NDA) Exam

You can take the NDA exam to join the Indian Air Force as an Officer after the successful completion of your 12th class. This exam is conducted two times a year and specifically in the month of June and December. The written test of the NDA exam is conducted by the UPSC.

After clearing the NDA written exam, the Air Force Selection Board screens all of the eligible candidates. This screening is again further divided into two stages.

Stage 1 –

  • Officer Intelligence Rating Test
  • Picture Perception and Discussion Test

Stage 2 –

All candidates who clear the screening test in Stage 1 have to undergo psychological tests, group tests, interviews, and a computerized pilot selection system.

After stage 2, if needed the candidate will also have to undergo medical and fitness tests to become a member of the Indian Air Force.

  1. Common Defense Services (CDS) Exam

If you are looking to join the Indian Air Force after completing your graduation, you can appear for the Common Defense Services Exam. Just like NDA, the CDS exam is also conducted twice a year and usually in the month of June and December. This exam is also conducted by the UPSC.

  • Nationality – Indian Citizen

  • Educational Qualification – 3-year graduation in any discipline from a recognized university or B.E. or B. Tech.
  • Age – 19 to 25 years

  • English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics

After clearing the CDS written exam, the Air Force Selection Board screens all of the eligible candidates. This screening is again further divided into two stages.

Stage 1 –

  • Officer Intelligence Rating Test

Stage 2 –

All candidates who clear the screening test in Stage 1 have to undergo psychological tests, group tests, interviews, and a computerized pilot selection system.

  1. Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) Exam

Indian Air Force also conducts the Air Force Common Admission Test exam to recruit for their Flying Branch and Ground Duty Branch. AFCAT is one of the most popular ways to join the Indian Air Force as an Officer.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality – Indian Citizen
  • Gender – Men
  • Educational Qualification – 3-year graduation in any discipline from a recognized university or B.E. or B. Tech.
  • Age – 20 to 24 years

Syllabus –

  • Numerical Ability, Reasoning & Military Aptitude, English and General Awareness

Once you clear the written AFCAT exam, you will have to appear for the medical and fitness tests. After the successful completion, you will be recruited on the basis of a merit list and will then be provided with rigorous training before joining the Indian Air Force.

Other Ways to Join Indian Air Force

The following are some of the other ways to join the Indian Air Force without even appearing for any of the written tests.

  1. NCC Entry

The National Cadet Corps which is also known as the Fourth Line of Defense offers you an opportunity to join the Indian Air Force without even appearing for any of the above-discussed written tests. University graduate students who have an NCC ‘C’ certificate and a minimum of ‘B’ grading and 50% marks in their degree examination are eligible to be inducted into the Indian Air Force as regular commissioned officers.

Such candidates are eligible to join the Indian Air Force only through the SSB interviews. Therefore, if you meet the eligibility criteria and do not want to write the written test for joining the Indian Air Force, you can have a career in the Indian Armed Forces through NCC recruitment.

  1. University Entry Scheme

Another way to join the Indian Air Force is through University Entry Scheme. Just like the NCC entry scheme, you do not have to appear for any of the written tests as discussed-above. Being said that, this entry scheme is for those people or candidates who are currently pursuing their B.E. or B. Tech. degree. Recruiting officers from the Indian Air Force visits different AICTE approved colleges for shortlisting the candidates, who are then called for a Short Service Commission interview.

However, it is important to note that only those candidates are shortlisted who do not have any backlogs in their four years of engineering coursework. After the initial round of interviews, candidates are shortlisted again for the SSB interview. If you clear the interview, you will then be called for medical and fitness tests. After clearing the medical and fitness test, you will be provided training before joining the Indian Air Force.

Therefore, even without appearing for the written test such as AFCAT and NDA, and CDS, you can join the Indian Air Force and offer your services to the country.

Pay and Allowances of Indian Air Force Officers

One of the attractive parts of serving your country under the Indian Air Force is the salary that you are going to receive. Of course, there is nothing more honorable than serving the country. But the Pascale of Indian Air Force Officers is also very attractive.
